Betrayal at House on the Hill Expansion Widow’s Walk Released in Fall 2016

Betrayal at House on the Hill is known for its narrative-driven gameplay and immersive atmosphere that, together, makes for an engrossing experience. Its popularity is such that I’ve heard groups declare that it’s a game that they’d take with them to a desert island. The reason is that in Betrayal, you’re part of a group of explorers inside a haunted house. At some point, one of the players will turn traitor and assume a horror trope, be it a vampire, a tentacled creep, or a mad scientist that’s out to kill everyone else in an event called the haunt.

With 50 different haunts in all, there’s a lot of variety to be had. But since the game has been out since 2004, there’s been a lot of time for players to have experienced every single haunt. In other words, the game’s gotten old for those early adopters.

So in due time, Avalon Hill/Wizards of the Coast have announced Betrayal’s first expansion, titled Widow’s Walk. This expansion contains more house tiles (including a rooftop that players can explore), new Omens, new Items, and Event cards.

Some of the examples of those can be found below:
New Betrayal Cards

But I think what people are looking for most are going to be the new Haunts. There’s going to be 50 in all!

The neat thing about all of these haunts is that they’re not the work of just one or two collaborators. Avalon Hill went out to recruit a bunch of people to work on them. They include people like Max Temkin and Eli Halpern, the guys behind Cards Against Humanity, Keith Baker and Andy Collins, both of whom worked on various D&D editions. There’s also Jerry Holkins from the webcomic Penny Arcade, Rob Daviau, who worked on Pandemic Legacy and Risk Legacy, and even included members from the video game community like Zoe Quinn and Anita Sarkeesian.

Now, with all that said, Betrayal at House on the Hill isn’t really my kind of game, so the expansion isn’t something I’ll be gunning for. But even I have to admit that this game delivers highly on the thematic experience, and experience that’s resonated with many a gaming group. So for those who’ve cherished the game so much, Widow’s Walk is pretty much a no-brainer in terms of getting on people’s buy list. The game’s coming out on October 14. Perfect for game nights leading up to Halloween!
